From Homemade Ginger Sirup to Ginger Lemonade

Ice Cold Ginny - a ginger lemonade made from homemade ginger sirup.

The other weekend, Markus and I had been out, exploring the city. We’ve visited a wonderful museum in Augsburg called TIM. It’s a museum that teaches you everything about textile and even offers workshops for crafty peeps like you and me.

Of course there is a gift shop where you can buy lovely textiles, that are being crafted in the museum. I couldn’t resist this wonderful 3D-patterned kitchen towel which cost 10 Euro. The price is not bad for something that is made in Germany.

A tea towel always comes in handy when working in the kitchen. You could also DIY a Beautiful Hand Stamped Dish Cloth for yourself or as a gift idea for friends & family.

Back in the days the textile industry in Augsburg was huge! After soaking up tons of new knowledge, we worked up some appetite for a refreshment. Of course we ended up in the in-house restaurant nunó that has a lovely wooden porch with asian inspired parasols in wonderful colours.

This is were I met my new bestie Ginny!

On our way to our table, nosy me scouted out all the refreshments the other guests had. There was a man drinking something veeeeeeery interesting looking and I asked the darling waitress right away what it was: “That is an Ice Cold Ginny!”, she told me and without further ado I ordered one. I am always in for new tastes and new experiences. #openminded

After one sip it was official: From now on, Ginny is my new best friend! As soon as we came back home, I started researching recipes for homemade ginger lemonade, so I can have my new bestie over for a visit every day! I found a couple interesting looking ones and started to create my very own recipe by experimenting some.

This is what I came up with, I hope you like?!

Ingredients for homemade ginger sirup:

  • 150 g fresh ginger
  • 1 organic lemon (zest and juice)
  • 250 g sugar
  • 800 ml water

How to make homemade ginger sirup – step by step instructions:

  • Skin ginger and chop it up.
  • Prepare the lemon zest and juice.
  • Boil ginger, lemon zest and juice in 800 ml water for about 25 minutes.
  • Get rid of bits and pieces by pouring the brew through a colander.
  • Add sugar and let cook for another 25 minutes.
  • Bottle the sirup whilst still hot. Make sure to clean your bottles before thoroughly.

Usage and Storage

Your homemade ginger sirup should be good for about four to six months. I researched a bit and found out, that it’s not only good for homemade lemonade or cocktails… It’s a also a natural remedy against a soar throat! As I suffer from that a lot, next time I will give it a go. Who knows, maybe this is a #LifeChanger as I am the #WorstPatientEver

A natural remedy against soar throat

Take a teaspoon of your homemade ginger sirup three times a day. If that’s too hot for your taste, you could pour the sirup into a cup of hot tea and drink it sip by sip.

Refreshing summer drink, ice cold ginger lemonade made from ginger sirup

Cut an organic lime in eight pieces, squeeze the juice over crushed ice and add the lime itself. Pour two to three tablespoons of your homemade ginger sirup on top and add 150 ml of sparkling water. For the grown up cocktail version add 100 ml sparkling wine and 50 ml soda water. Add some slices of fresh ginger and a stem of mint. Enjoy!

I love happily slurping away on my lemonade with a pink or turquoise straw.

Have you ever made your own sirup before? And did you know that Ginny has a best friend named Hugo?

PS: Don’t forget to PIN this for later.
